The Danny Oates Memorial 5K, sponsored by the Frank W. Thompson Lodge, Bedford Masonic Association was founded to pay tribute to the beloved son of Bob and Judy Oates, long time Bedford residents. Bob is a retired Bedford firefighter, and their son Brian currently serves as a firefighter now. Since 1998, the race has added over $100,000 to the scholarship fund, and last year gave out over $15,000 in scholarships.
On July 3, 1991 at age 4, Danny Oates drowned. Responding to the call was Oates' firefighter father, Bob. It was a day that changed the Bedford Fire Department, and inspired help Danny's brother Brian to become a firefighter. A few years later, Paul O'Brien, a Bedford Police officer and fellow Mason with Bob Oates suggested a road race in Danny's memory. That year, one $500 scholarship was given out. Twenty years later, the race gives out over $15,000 each year and is a pillar of Bedford Day.
